Conning Industry Outlook Helps Ready Insurers for 2020 Business, Investment Challenges

February 20, 2020

Environment Highlights More Opportunities for Property/Casualty Companies and More Concerns for Life-Annuity Firms, but Challenges Abound

HARTFORD, CT – February 20, 2020 –Leading global investment management firm Conning has produced an industry outlook webinar analyzing challenges that U.S. insurers face in 2020, both in their business and in managing their investment portfolios. The outlook highlights that, while the environment for property-casualty insurers is relatively more favorable than the one for life-annuity companies, both face many challenges as competition remains intense.

Conning’s “U.S. Insurance Industry Outlook” webinar is presented in chapter format, in which the four sections – Industry Overview, Investment Implications, Property-Casualty Sector Outlook and Life-Annuity Sector Outlook – can be watched independently according to viewer interest.  The webinar is based on Conning’s annual insurance industry outlook, a version of which was also presented at St. John’s University Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, in conjunction with the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library, on January 30, 2020.

“To borrow from Charles Dickens, it appears that the insurance business in 2020 is a tale of two industries,” said Steve Webersen, head of Conning’s Insurance Research team and the presenter of the webinar’s industry overview. “The property-casualty sector is seeing prices on the rise with improving terms and conditions, supported by a favorable economy, while the life-annuity sector is confronted with low interest rates, rising regulations and weak sales growth.”

The webinar offers insights to help insurers address the industry and investment challenges of 2020 and seek an edge in a highly competitive market. Click here to view Conning's 2020 Industry Outlook.
