Global Mergers & Acquisitions in the Insurance Industry: 2023 Distribution and Services Edition

April 04, 2024

HARTFORD, CT – April 10, 2024 – In 2023, the distribution sector reported an increase in number of acquisitions and values from 2022. The services sector, however, reported a decrease in both numbers and values over the same period.

“For the distribution sector, many of the drivers of increasing consolidation remain in place. These include aging agency principals without succession plans, valuations that remain attractive with high premium rates, and compelling economies of scale,” said Alan Dobbins, a Director of Insurance Research at Conning. “However, in 2023 and continuing into 2024, macro-economic factors are combining to constrain M&A activity.”

“U.S. insurance service sector M&A can be divided into three periods,” said Scott Hawkins, Head of Insurance Research. “The first period, from 2006 through 2015, was volatile in terms of the number of M&A transactions. Beginning in 2016 and continuing through 2019, the number of M&A transactions was relatively steady. M&A transaction volatility appears to have returned starting in 2020, with activity in 2023 down relative to the prior year.”

The Conning study, “Global Mergers & Acquisitions in the Insurance Industry: 2023 Distribution and Services Edition” tracks both U.S. and non-U.S. distribution and services M&A activity across property-casualty, life-annuity, and health insurance sectors. The report provides industry transaction trend information over the preceding decade, with specific transactions detailed for each of the major sectors.
