Appendix—Life Settlements Market Structure and Risks

Introduction

The economy in 2024 through October 2025 has been marked by higher interest rates and greater uncertainty with the potential for a recession looming overhead. At the same time, equity market growth has been strong, albeit volatile. Geopolitical tensions have spilled over into the economy, and investors have been cautious when deploying capital outside traditional markets.

Last year, our view was that the life settlement sector was steadily growing. Even with the decrease in annual new settlements in 2024, our view has not changed. The market may have paused in 2024, but the long-term forces favor renewed growth over the coming decade. Conning’s 20th annual life settlement review examines the key forces fueling continued growth within the life settlement industry.
