Conning—Successful Individual Life-Annuity Players Announced

(Hartford, CT) July 7, 2014—Conning releases its fifth study of successful individual life-annuity companies in three size categories and their characteristics.

“Our ongoing study of successful individual life-annuity companies continues with the 2014 edition, which for the first time includes a detailed analysis of the large company segment,” said Terence Martin, analyst at Conning. “We identified fifteen companies that met our success criteria across the three analyzed size categories: small, midsized, and large companies. Of the fifteen successful companies, eight also met the criteria in last year’s analysis. One overriding characteristic of these successful companies was the consistency in their product mix over time; they appear to have found and kept true to the optimal mix for their firm.”

The Conning study, “Successful Individual Life-Annuity Specialists” analyzes individual life-annuity insurer performance, identifies the successful firms based on Conning’s criteria, and identifies shared characteristics among the successful firms.

“In our analysis we see a greater focus on annuities among the successful insurers than we had previously,” said Steve Webersen, director of research at Conning. “Yet no specific mix of individual life and annuities appears more conducive to success, although stability of that mix does contribute. Dependence on single premium products works for larger companies, which can absorb the corresponding volatility, while smaller companies are more likely to succeed if they avoid single premium products. We identified a number of other interesting findings related to geographic mix, investments, policy size and distributor productivity.”
